Killers of Karachi’s young mechanical engineering have been arrested in Quetta, Balochistan, sources within the Crime Investigation Agency said on Saturday. The suspects had fled to Balochistan after the murder.

Irtaqa Nadeem, a mechanical engineer by profession and the recipient of a gold medal, was killed by robbers in the city’s Gulshan-i-Iqbal after he put up resistance on June 01.

Killers snatched his new motorbike and cell phone and rode away. He died on the spot.

Opposition parties condemned the killing and demanded the immediate arrest of the perpetrators. They slammed the Pakistan Peoples Party government in Sindh as well as law enforcement agencies for failing to curb the menace of street crime in the city.

Sources said that the criminal record of the arrested suspects was being obtained, but the suspects were involved in the theft and sale of cars and motorcycles in Balochistan.

According to DIG Maqsood Haider, “significant progress” has been made in the Irtaqa murder case, and more suspects have also been identified.

Meanwhile, SSP Adil Chandio said that the SIU team was present in Balochistan and “important evidence” has been found in the murder case.

While reacting to reports, journalist Hamid Mir said that Karachi police have not shared the names of the killers. They have only said that the killers were related to Balochistan. “The people of Karachi should punish the killers of their youth.”

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori stated that he had met with the brothers of Nadeem, describing them as educated with no political affiliations.

It was not a case of street crime, he told reporters outside the victim’s house. He was of the view that when Nadeem fell off a motorcycle, the subsequent firing was a matter that required investigation to determine the reasons behind it.

He expressed concerns over the lack of fear and deterrence among criminals. Tessori added that he would be speaking to the Sindh High Court chief justice and the bar association, urging them to not support such individuals and ensure that criminals do not receive any special privileges, even in jail.
