Legendary comedian Jerry Seinfeld has expressed nostalgia for a bygone era of “dominant masculinity”, triggering sharp criticism from social media users.

Seinfeld, 70, said he had always aspired to embody that type of traditional masculinity, but felt his “childish pursuit” of comedy prevented him from fully realising that goal.

The “Seinfeld” star acknowledged that the concept of “dominant masculinity” could be seen as “toxic,” but expressed his desire to be a “real man.” He praised his “Unfrosted” co-star Hugh Grant as an exemplar of “sophisticated, stylish masculinity”.

Seinfeld’s comments generated online backlash, with some critics mocking the comedian’s perceived lack of traditional masculine qualities. Others dredged up Seinfeld’s past relationship with a 16-year-old girlfriend when he was in his 40s, labelling his latest remarks as further evidence of “toxic” mindsets.

The legendary comedian has not shied away from wading into politically charged territory in the past, asserting that “political correctness is something of a worry for people that can’t think.” He told Page Six last month that he wasn’t concerned about potentially offending people with his occasional provocative commentary.
