In a recent BBC documentary, a UK charity called Depher has come under scrutiny for its alleged involvement in a scam targeting unsuspecting donors. The exposé has revealed that British actor Hugh Grant, known for his philanthropic efforts, was a major donor to the charity, contributing a substantial amount of £75,000.

Depher, founded by James Anderson, gained significant attention on social media for its heartwarming stories of helping the elderly and vulnerable. The charity claimed to provide free plumbing, heating, and food-shop services to those in need across Britain. Anderson’s online presence, along with celebrity endorsements from Grant and musician Lily Allen, helped the charity amass around two million pounds in donations.

However, the BBC investigation uncovered disturbing evidence suggesting that Depher had fabricated viral stories of kindness and misused funds for personal gain. Anderson was accused of lying in numerous social media posts, using pictures of individuals without their consent, and even utilizing company funds to purchase a house and a car.

The documentary revealed instances where the charity exploited vulnerable individuals for their own benefit. One example involved a woman who Anderson claimed to have saved from suicide, but in reality, she had passed away years earlier. Another woman had her photos used without permission, while false claims of theft were made against her. These revelations have sparked outrage and raised concerns about the ethical practices of Depher.

Despite the allegations, Anderson has denied some of the claims but admitted to making mistakes. Grant, as one of the high-profile donors, has not publicly addressed the allegations against the charity.

Depher’s actions have drawn significant attention, with the hashtag # Depher trending on social media following the documentary’s release. The Hollywood Reporter said that it had reached out to Depher and Grant’s representatives for comment but has yet to receive a response.

The revelations surrounding Depher highlight the importance of exercising caution when donating to charitable organizations and conducting thorough research to ensure transparency and accountability. As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen what consequences, if any, will be faced by the charity and its founder.

It is crucial for donors to be vigilant and verify the credibility of charitable organizations before making contributions to ensure that their funds are directed towards legitimate causes that genuinely help those in need.
