Google unveils Project Astra at the conference
At the I/O 2024 conference, Google unveiled its newest AI advancement called Project Astra.
The CEO of DeepMind, Demis Hassabis shared his team’s goal of creating universally useful AI agents for everyday life.
Project Astra represents a significant step forward in this endeavor by utilizing a smartphone’s camera as the main interface to help users recognize objects in their surroundings.
Project Astra by Google is envisioned as their version of J.A.R.V.I.S., the intelligent AI assistant from the Marvel Universe that is still in the prototype stage.
In a demo video presented at Google I/O, the assistant demonstrated its capabilities through video and audio interactions, rather than a traditional chatbot interface, showcasing a woman is seen exploring the capabilities of the system.
It assisted the user in tasks such as locating misplaced glasses, reviewing code, and providing information about specific parts of a speaker shown on video.
Google emphasized the importance of a chatbot being responsive and conversational without any delays, as demonstrated in the real-time conversation showcased in the video.
The video introduces a novel language module within the latest version of GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer).
The project is inspired by Scarlett Johansson’s character in the renowned Hollywood film “Her,” this linguistic module has been meticulously crafted to enhance user interaction and understanding.
Hassabis acknowledged the engineering challenge of achieving natural and prompt responses.
The CEO of Google, Sundar Pichai expressed expectations of launching Project Astra in Gemini later this year.
