A full court meeting of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has unanimously decided to give an institutional response on judicial interference, said sources on Tuesday.

They met today to deliberate upon the proposals and finalise the same before their submission to the Supreme Court in a matter related to the alleged meddling by the executive and personnel of intelligence agencies in judicial affairs.

IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq presided over the full court meeting which continued for two and a half hours. Eight judges, including the six judges, who wrote the letter to the Supreme Judicial Council, were also in attendance.

The full court meeting was attended by Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, Justice Tariq Jahangiri, Justice Babar Sattar, Justice Sardar Ijaz Ishaq, Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir, and Justice Samin Rizvi.

Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, who did not sign the letter, was also present at the meeting.

Last week, the IHC had sought suggestions from all judges, including district and sessions court by Monday on the letter.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court in its order of the first proceedings of the suo motu proceedings of the meddling case sought proposals from the main stakeholders in the judicial system and the independence of the judiciary ie the Pakistan Bar Council, the Supreme Court Bar Association, the high courts, and the federal government.

“They should suggest what should be the institutional response and mechanism to address the issues like the ones raised in the letter [of IHC judges] and ensure that such issues do not arise in future and, if they do, to fix liability and proceed against those responsible,” the order stated.

Sources said that the IHC has resolved to refer all recommendations to the SC, with no dissenting opinion among the judges present in the full court meeting. A draft of the recommendations will be prepared and sent to the Supreme Court before the designated deadline.
