The animals that are found only in Pakistan and nowhere else
Pakistan is home to a rich variety of wildlife, with unique species residing in its diverse landscapes. However, some of these animals are unique to the country and are not found anywhere else.
Here are some notable animals unique to the country:
Markhor
The national animal of Pakistan, the markhor, roams the mountainous regions. This majestic goat species possesses impressive spiraled horns and a muscular build, earning its name meaning “snake eater” due to its ability to fend off snakes and protect its harem.
Indus River Dolphin
The rare Indus River Dolphin, also known as the Bhulan, inhabits the Indus River basin. This endangered freshwater dolphin boasts a distinctive long snout, enabling it to navigate the murky waters while hunting for prey.
Snow Leopards
Pakistan’s northern mountains, including the Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir regions, are home to the elusive snow leopards. These magnificent creatures, protected by local communities, are critically endangered, requiring concerted conservation efforts.
Pakistani Sandcat
The Pakistan sand cat, a subspecies of sand cat, thrives in the country’s deserts. Being the smallest wild cat, it was first observed in Balochistan and later in the Chagai Hills.
Pakistani Marsh Crocodile
The Marsh Crocodile, or Mugger Crocodile, resides in the Indus River and its tributaries. Found in both freshwater and saltwater habitats, this carnivorous reptile can reach lengths of 4-5 meters.
Himalayan Ibex
The Himalayan ibex, a large mountain goat, inhabits elevations ranging from 3,660 to over 5,000 meters. These agile creatures are widespread in the Karakoram, Hindukush, and Himalayan Mountain ranges of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Chiltan Wild Goat
The Chiltan wild goat, possibly a subspecies of the wild goat or markhor, is native to Pakistan. Its reddish-grey coloration, along with a distinct dark brown mid-dorsal stripe, sets it apart.
Himalayan Snowcock
The Himalayan snowcock, a pheasant species, thrives in the Himalayas and northern areas of Pakistan. These birds are often found in steep rocky cliffs and alpine pastures.
Alexandrine Parakeets
Known for their intelligence and remarkable ability to mimic human speech, Alexandrine parakeets are common birds in Pakistan and popular as pets.
Bearded Vultures
Bearded vultures, or lammergeiers, are frequently observed in Pakistan’s open ranges and mountainous regions. These large birds, with impressive wingspans, play an essential role in maintaining ecological balance. They are known as bone crushers because they eat 70–90% of their food as bone marrow.
