Norway removes Pakistan from Threat Assessment list

Inclusion in the list was creating problems for Pakistani visa holders and academics

In a major development on the diplomatic front, Norway has removed Pakistan from its list of National Threat Assessment 2024.

The NTA 2024 was recently issued by the Norwegian Police and Secrity Service.

The report is issued annually with an analysis of which countries pose a risk to Norway in terms of intelligence sabotage, spread of weapons of mass destruction, terrorism and extremism.

The NTA is given alot of weight by policy decision makers in Norway and is used to inform diplomatic decisions including visa grants.

Pakistan had been added to the list a few years ago leading to multiple difficulties for Pakistanis trying to get visas.

The inclusion had also affected students and researchers who were faced a tacit ban for participation in academic activities.

A 2022 report had said that ‘actors affiliated with Russia, China, Iran and Pakistan will pose special challenges.’

It had identified illegal arms procurement as one of the major challenges facing Pakistan.

The same assessments had been carried forward to its 2023 reports as well.
