Kite flying, manufacturing banned in Karachi for two months

Ban will remain in effect from March 30 to May 29

The Karachi commissioner has banned the purchase, selling and flying of kites in the city because of the dangerous string used in the activity.

According to the notification issued on Saturday, a complete ban has been imposed on “manufacturing/selling of kites, sharp Maanjha, metallic wire and nylon cord as well as flying of kites within the territorial limits of Karachi Division for a period of two months w.e.f March 30, 2024 to May 29, 2024.”

The decision comes after many citizens got hurt due to kit strings. Earlier this week, a man was injured after getting tangled in a loose kite string in the city’s Azizabad area. He was riding a motorbike when he was entrapped by a kite string in Mohammadi Colony.

But a tragic incident was reported in Punjab where two men died due to the strings of stray kites, prompting the government to order a crackdown on the making, selling, and buying of chemical string used in kites.

The notification added that the ban was imposed under Section 144 of the CrPC which empowers the district administration to issue orders in public interest that may place a ban on an activity for a specific period.
