Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s TikTok commentator aspiring to make it to global stage
Waqar Bettani, hailing from Lakki Marwat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, became an internet sensation by doing cricket commentary in New Zealand’s Danny Morrison’s accent.
Mostly seen in open fields or his place of work, Bettani employs different strategies in his TikTok videos to make his video humorous while commentating about imaginary matches or in some instances about a fruit or his motorbike.
The TikTok commentator’s profile boasts 137,500 followers and has received 2.4 million likes on his videos.
Speaking to Arab News Pakistan in an interview, Bettani said that his family moved to Peshawar two decades ago, where he is currently pursuing a zoology degree and juggling two jobs.
The 21-year-old influencer said that he had been commentating on imaginary matches for a long time, however, the success of his first video clip inspired him to set up his own social media accounts.
“When I talk, I say my name is ‘Danny Morrison Lite’, so I am a lite version of him because I love his commentary and my accent is just the same as his,” he told Arab News Pakistan.
According to Bettani, he has been invited to district-level tournaments to showcase his commentary skills. He, however, aspires to commentate on national and international-level games.
“I look forward to being part of the international cricket commentary box and in national level games like PSL,” he said.
In love with the English language, Bettani said he used to speak English with his friends and teachers since he was a school-going child.
The TikToker is a supporter of Peshawar Zalmi and is a huge fan of Babar Azam.
“I support my own team, Peshawar Zalmi, the Yellow Storm,” Bettani said. “We love cricket, we love PSL, we are supporting our teams and we are behind them.”
