Committee recommends legal action against Rawalpindi commissioner

Inquiry committee has submitted its report to the ECP

An inquiry committee set up by the Election Commission of Pakistan has recommended leagal action against former Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaquat Chatha, according to sources.

Sources said that the committee completed its report and submitted it to the ECP on Friday, in which it described Chatha’s allegations as false.

The report includes statements from Chatha as well six returning officers from Rawalpindi.

The committee has recommended legal action against Chatha under contempt of ECP or other criminal provisions.

The report said that Chatha had admitted that his statement was false and also apologised.

In an explosive press conference last Saturday, Chatha said that he had asked Returning Officers to change election results in the Rawalpindi division. He had claimed that winners were turned into losers throughout the division.

In response, the ECP had formed an investigative committee to probe the claims.
