The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf will write a letter to the International Monetary Fund on Friday (today), party leader Gohar Khan has said.

“The PTI mentioned a letter. We will write that letter to the IMF. Inshallah any time soon today we will write it today,” he told reporters outside the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. “It will hopefully be shared with the reporters in the evening.”

On Thursday, party leader Ali Zafar said that the party’s founding chairman will write to the international lender to call for an independent audit of the February 8 general elections before it continues talks with Islamabad.

He said the IMF, the European Union and other organisations had a charter that stated that good governance was needed for working in the country or giving a loan.

A question related to the development was raised during a press briefing held by an IMF official early on Friday.

Julie Kozack, the head of the Communications Department at the IMF, was asked whether the IMF would entertain any letter by Khan calling for investigations into election irregularities.

“I’m not going to comment on ongoing political developments. So, I don’t have anything else to add to what I just said,” she said.

“We will share it with you after writing it,” he said and added that the party wanted supremacy of the rule of law in the country and a strong economy.

Gohar added that the PTI also wanted the protection of basic rights in the country.

When asked whether it would be in the national interest, he said that letters have been written in the past and there was a procedure to write them.

“We will write in the national interest of the country and we will not do anything against the country’s interest. We will play every role for the betterment of the economy.”

He clarified that the PTI will not do anything to harm the state and the economy. “The letter will be in front of you and read it.”

Gohar brushed aside the impression that the country would not get the loan because of the loan. “That’s why I said that any decision of the PTI will not be against the state, democracy, people, and government. Imran Khan said this is our country and we are fighting for this country.”
