Schools and colleges would hold at least one period a week on environmental issues, the Lahore High Court has said while hearing a petition seeking measures to control smog in the mega city.

“It is directed that the schools and colleges will hold at least one period in a week during which the students will be practically informed regarding usefulness of rooftop gardening and other environmental issues and the danger heat,” the court said in its order of the last hearing on Thursday.

The five-page written order authored by LHC judge Justice Shahid Karim has parties to come up with further proceedings on February 23 (Friday).

“The decision shall be conveyed by the learned member to all the colleges and schools,” it read.

The court issued its directive on a petition filed by Haroon Farooq in 2018, seeking measures for controlling the smog that causes severe health risks to the people.

In the hearings so far, officials from different departments and police have appeared in court and presented their reports.

The high court had also formed a Water and Environmental Commission related to smog.

The court directed that different clubs in the area of Lahore as well as parks and gardens being maintained by the Parks and Horticulture Authority shall be granted by the members of the commission after service of notice upon these clubs and parks.
