Pakistani prisoner commits suicide in Hong Kong jail
A Pakistani prisoner committed suicide in a Hong Kong jail on Monday, Dimsum Daily reported. He was identified as the mastermind behind a violent robbery in Hung Hom on September 21, 2018.
According to Dimsum Daily, Mehmood Arshad was found hanging from his Stanley Prison’s cell window grille bars. A correctional officer saw his body in the early morning.
Arshad, 41, had been remanded since March 2021 on charges of robbery.
The report said that the Pakistani prisoner was among a group of assailants who attacked two employees of a jewellery shop. The group included Gurung Royal, a South Asian man with permanent residence status, Nepalese national Limbu Binod, and Indian national Sahil Kumar.
They severed their feet with knives. They fled the shop with HK$6.5 million (Rs234,360,000) in cash and cheques.
The prosecution in Arshad’s case said that he played a “pivotal role” as the mastermind of the planned robbery “despite not being present at the scene.” He was accused of recruiting the robbers and guiding them in executing the crime.
