The confusing encounter between a preacher, a Pakistani uncle and TikTok
The confusion created by homophones can be particularly cumbersome when the people involved in a conversation are speaking different languages altogether.
The confusion presnted itself to Zimbabwean preacher Mufti Menk when he confronted a Pakistani man in the UK.
The Mufti himself told the story as he made a speech in Leeds on January 1. With a lot of Pakistanis in attendance, he led off with a joke that could resonate with people.
Mentioning how the previous speaker had discussed TikTok, Menk said that something funny had happened to him in Leeds.
He said he met an elderly Pakistani uncle and asked him how he was doing. The Pakistani replied, “Tik Tok.”
The premise drew laughter from the crowd immediately.
After repeating his question and getting the same reply, Menk asked the uncle, “You saw me on TikTok?”
The Pakistani replied, “No Tik Tok.”
As they went back and forth, the Pakistani man said, “Since I was small Tik Tok.”
When the Mufti expressed his surprise at the fact that the platform had only been launched a few years ago, the man told him even his old generations had been Tik Tok.
At this point another man intervened and told him that the man was actually saying ‘theek thak’, the Urdu term for saying he was alright.
Apart from being the Grand Mufti of Zimbabwe, Menk is something of an internet celebrity with millions of followers acorss social media platforms. His videos often go viral on social media.
