Cricket Australia has been at the forefront of introducing innovation in cricket since the Kerry Packer era in 70’s and the trend continues today.

On Friday, Electra stumps were introduced in the Men’s Big Bash League for the first time. According to former cricketer Michael Vaughan, they were used in Women’s BBL before.

The Electra Stumps consist of an LED setup that displays five different colours based on different scenarios in the game. Many would not know that the BBL introduced Zing bails, which would light up after being dislodged, 11 years ago.

The stumps were used during a match between the Sydney Sixers and Adelaide Strikers.

Here are the five colours

  • Dismissal: Flashing red and then fire
  • Fours: Colour shift
  • Sixes: Colour scrolling
  • No ball: Red and white scrolling
  • Between overs: purple and blue scrolling
