While polygamy is allowed for Muslim men in Pakistan it is not permitted under the Christian Marriage Act

A Pakistani Christian man has found himself in hot water for trying to emulate his Muslim countrymen.

Joshua contracted a second marriage and now he has been sentenced to three years in prison. He will also pay Rs30,000 in fines.

While polygamy is allowed for Muslim men in Pakistan it is not permitted under the Christian Marriage Act that governs Christian unions in the country. The law was enacted in 1872 when the region was under British Raj. Pakistan adopted it like many other British laws.

Joshua who is based in Karachi decided to marry again but his estranged first wife went to court.

The judge allowed Joshua’s first wife to register a police complaint at the Mehmoodabad Police Station.

After the final judgement on Monday, the court sent Joshua to jail.

Karachi Central Jail official took his custody from the court premises.
