ECP rules out re-run of PTI intra-party election, sets petitions for Dec 12 hearing

Akbar S Babar's plea for a re-run rejected

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has rejected a petition filed by a renegade PTI member, Akbar S. Babar, against the party’s internal election.

Babar wanted the ECP to order a re-run of PTI’s intra-party election, claiming that the election held on December 2 was not valid.

However, the ECP rejected the plea and told the petitioner a re-run was out of the question.

The ECP, however, approved other petitions about the intra-party election and set a December 12 hearing date.

ECP’s KP member said that section 215 of the Election Commission Act was clear on the issue.

The ECP member also said that there would be consequences for not holding intra-party elections.

Arguing before the ECP, Akbar S. Babar termed the December 2 election exercise as a ‘fraud’ and demanded that a fresh election should be held under ECP monitoring.

Earlier, a petition was filed against the intra-party election of PTI in ECP where Barrister Gohar Khan succeeded Imran Khan as the party chairman.

The intra-party elections were not held as per the Constitution, said the petition. The development comes day after Akbar S Babar, one of the founding members of the PTI, told Aaj News that he would challenge the PTI’s intra-party election in the ECP.

However, the ECP rejected the plea and told the petitioner that there was no way to do it again.
