CJP Isa surrenders two luxury vehicles to interim Punjab govt

Both vehicles will be auctioned off

Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa surrendered two luxury vehicles to the caretaker Punjab government on Friday. Both vehicles would be auctioned off.

The two vehicles, which were given to the CJP in September 2020, were worth around Rs61 million, the SC registrar said in a letter to the Punjab cabinet secretary and chief secretary.

The two vehicles are sitting at SC Rest House. They would be auctioned off.

It was not appropriate to import luxury vehicles for the people serving on constitutional posts, the letter said and that the incumbent CJP has not used the two cars.

He urged that the money earned after auctioning off the vehicles should be spent on public transport.

Justice Qazi Faez Isa was sworn in as the 29th chief justice on September 17, 2023.

In October, a full court upheld Parliament-approved Practice and Procedure Act which curbs the chief justice’s powers to constitute benches and take suo moto notice.

The apex court gave a majority verdict that varied when deciding about different sections of the law. While the court gave an overall 10-5 majority verdict, one of the sections was upheld by 9-6 and another by 8-7.

The decision was hailed by many legal experts.
