Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi has directed the authorities to provide protection to the family of the girl who was allegedly killed during a quarrel in Lahore’s Chung Town earlier this month.

In a statement, he sought a report from Punjab Inspector General of Police Usman Anwar and directed him to take swift action against the alleged killers of the girl who was reported to have been a member of an overseas Pakistani family.

A first information report, which was registered on the complaint of the victim’s uncle Rizwanul Haq on November 4 at the Chung police station, said that the complainant’s sister was traveling with her son and daughter near the city’s Agrics Town when suspects “Sajid, Amjad and two unidentified men” came out of a car and purportedly opened fire on the family’s car.

“My niece Tazaeen Khan, 23, was critically injured after she was hit by a bullet. We moved her to the Jinnah hospital,” it added.

The report invoked sections 324 (attempt to commit qatl-i-amd) and 34 (Acts done by several persons In furtherance of common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

Interim CM Naqvi directed the authorities to take disciplinary action against police officials who were found negligent and further directed them to arrest the prime suspect and others involved.

He took notice after the bereaved family wrote a letter to him, pleading for action against the suspects which the family claimed were coercing it into making peace with them.

“Suspect Abdur Rehman first hit the car and then called his uncle who opened fire on the car that resulted in the death of Tazaeen Khan while police were still unsuccessful in arresting the suspects,” the letter said and described the Rehman as an “underage driver”.

In a statement, Lahore DIG Investigation Imran Kishwar claimed that the police have arrested suspect Abid, who allegedly fired shots, and recovered the weapon from him while suspect Abdur Rehman has secured interim bail till November 28 (Tuesday).

Rehman would be arrested after his interim bail is rejected, he added.

DIG Kishwar said that Section 302 (punishment of qatl-i-amd) of the PPC had been added to the FIR after the girl died a week after her treatment.
