The chief of Hamas told Reuters on Tuesday that the Palestinian militant group was near a truce agreement with Israel, even as the deadly assault on Gaza continued and rockets were being fired into Israel.

Hamas officials are “close to reaching a truce agreement” with Israel and the group has delivered its response to Qatari mediators, Ismail Haniyeh said in a statement sent to Reuters by his aide.

Here are the latest updates

  • More than 13,300 people have been killed in Gaza since Israeli bombardment began on October 7, Gaza’s government media office says. In Israel, the official death toll from Hamas’s attacks stands at about 1,200.

  • Israeli air attacks have continued in Gaza through the night, hitting the al-Bureij camp, Rafah and Gaza City, among other areas.

  • Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres, or MSF) say its staff are unable to evacuate from al-Shifa Hospital while hundreds also remain trapped at the Indonesian Hospital after at least 12 people were killed in the hospital in an Israeli attack.

  • Negotiators have been working to seal a deal to allow the release of around 240 mostly Israeli captives seized on October 7 and a ceasefire in Gaza where more than 13,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks. The release of some of the Palestinians, including women and children, in Israeli prisons is also reportedly being discussed.

  • Qatar’s prime minister said on Sunday that a deal to free some of the captives in return for a temporary ceasefire hinged on “minor” practical issues.

  • On Monday, US President Joe Biden said he believed a deal to free the captives was close.

  • Negotiations to secure the release of captives held in Gaza are advancing, the White House says, but nothing has been finalised. Relatives of captives urge far-right politicians to stop talk of the execution of Hamas detainees, saying it could endanger negotiations.
