World Cup 2023: South Africa thump New Zealand by 190 runs

South Africa thrashed New Zealand by 190 runs in their match at the World Cup on Wednesday on the back of a brilliant show of batting and bowling by the Protease.

Chasing a target of 358, the Blackcaps were all out on 167 in the 36th over as Protease won by a huge margin of 190 runs in Pune.

Glenn Phillips remained the highest run-getter for New Zealand as he scored 60 off 50 balls. He was followed by Will Young who scored 33 runs off 37 balls. Seven of New Zealand’s batters failed to reach a double-digit figure.

For South Africa, Keshav Maharaj took four wickets while Marco Jansen took three wickets.

Batting first, South Africa set a target of 358 for New Zealand after Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen hit centuries.

After being put to bat first, the Protease lost their skipper Temba Bavuma early on 38. He scored 24 runs.

It was the 200-run partnership between De Kock and Dussen that helped South Africa reach a massive total in Pune.

De Kock made 114 off 116 balls while Dussen smashed 133 off 118 deliveries.

David Miller also hit a fiery fifty as he scored 53 off 30 balls. His knock included four maximums and two boundaries.

South Africa ended with 357 over the loss of four wickets in 50 overs.

New Zealand won the toss and chose to field against South Africa in the 32nd match of the ICC world Cup 2023.

New Zealand is currently third in the tournament’s table after back-to-back losses to Australia and India.

South Africa are currently second on the table with their lone loss coming against Netherlands.
