Pakistani Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai has urged people to donate to relief efforts in quake-hit Afghanistan, as multiple earthquakes in the country intensify the dire humanitarian situation.

“In a month already filled with tragedy, I am devastated to see the toll from multiple earthquakes in Afghanistan: thousands killed or injured, buildings and homes destroyed,” she said in a thread on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Tuesday.

Multiple earthquakes earlier this month have killed over 1,000 people in the western province of Heart, destroying entire villages in the war-battered country, many of which were scattered in remote areas.

Malala had shared the video of the United Nations’ World Food Programme in which the organisation of the quake hit Afghanistan at a time when a total of 15.3 million Afghans were not consuming enough food.

“Needs are unprecedented,” said the WFP while saying that the organisation needed $400 million to help the most vulnerable seven million people get through winter.

Malala was “heartbroken” to know that women and girls, who were forced to stay indoors as part of the Taliban’s gender “apartheid regime,” made up the majority of victims.

“I send my deepest condolences to the impacted families and encourage you to donate to relief efforts, if you are able,” she said.
