World Cup 2023: Dutch hand shocking defeat to South Africa

Protease lose four wicket in quick session while chasing 246 target

Netherlands upset South Africa by winning the 15th match of the World Cup by 38 runs at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on Tuesday.

Earlier, the South Africa’s top order collapsed as they lost four wickets on 44 while chasing a target of 246 put by the Netherlands in the rain-affected game which was reduced to 43 overs.

Skipper Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock were quick to return to the pavilion as both openers gave a start of 39 to the South African side.

David Miller remained the top scorer for the Protease as he contributed 43 off 52 balls. A late blitz from Keshav Maharaj helped South Africa cross 200 runs. He scored 40 off 37 balls.

For Netherlands, Logan van Beek took three wickets while Roelof van der Merwe and Paul van Meekeren took two wickets each as South Africa were all out on 207.

Batting first, Netherlands put 245 on the board against South Africa in the rain-affected game.

Dutch skipper Scott Edwards remained unbeaten on 78 off 69 balls as the team set a target of 246 on the loss of eight wickets.

The top and middle order of the Dutch side failed to score big as wickets were falling on intervals. The opening pair of Netherlands failed to give a strong starts as the first wicket fell in seventh over on 24.

For South Africa, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada took two wickets each.

South Africal will look to continue their strong run at the 2023 World Cup as they begin chase in the 15th match of the tournament.

The match was supposed begin at 1:30 pm. However, it was delayed for two hours due to rain.

South Africa is coming off convincing victories against Sri Lanka and Australia, while Netherlands enter the game after losing against Pakistan and New Zealand.

Both teams expressed concern over the condition of the outfield.
