LHC gives IG Punjab ‘last chance’ to recover Imran Riaz

CJ tells IG his patience is wearing out

The Lahore High Court told Punjab’s inspector general he was being his ‘last chance’ to recover journalist Imran Riaz Khan who has been missing since May.

LHC’s Chief Justice Muhammad Ameer Bhatti resumed hearing in the Imran Riaz Khan case on Wednesday. IG Punjab Usman Anwar appeared in person along with other police officials and asked the court for some time to recover the journalist.

However, the chief justice expressed his displeasure over the IG’s request and said he had tolerating the Anwar’s responses for five months with patience. However, he added that his patience was running thin.

The chief justice then asked the petitioner’s lawyer, Mian Wali Ashfaq, if he agreed to granting more duration to the police, to which the lawyer consented. The court then adjourned proceedings till September 26.

Khan’s father, who is the petitioner in the case, told the court that his son had been ‘abducted’ and the court should order his recovery.

The court then asked the IG about the progress made over the journalist’s recovery, to which Anwar replied that the police had met Khan’s parents and briefed them on the progress.

Khan had gone ‘missing’ after his arrest by police on May 11 from Sialkot as he tried to leave the country. His arerst came two days after protests broke out across the country in the wake of Imran Khan’s arrest from Islamabad.
