A United States official said that the country is closely montoring the situation around the arrest of Imran Khan on Tuesday.

Vedant Patel, deputy spokesperson for the US State Department, made the remarks in response to a question on Wednesday.

The question, posed by a Pakistani reporter, asked if Congress had asked State Department to conduct an investigation regarding the cipher since it is related to the case Khan is incarcerated in.

In response, Patel said he could not answer in specifics but congress is consulted on a number of issues.

“Again, though, as you’ve heard us talk about, we are continuing to monitor this case and monitor the situation closely,” he said.

The US has repeatedly denied that its officials were involved in an consipiracy to oust Imran Khan from office in a no-confidence motion last year.

Khan has been jailed in Attock since August 5. Although, the original arrest was made on charges of corruption, a court later approved his bail in the case.

However, Khan has still not been released since he is accused of violating the Official Secrets Act by revealing the contents of a classified cipher which involved a Pakistani diplomat’s conversation with a senior US official.

Meanwhile, US Ambassdor Donald Blome has met with Pakistani officials including caretaker CM Mohsin Maqvi, IG Punjab Usman Anwar and Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja to discuss the law and order situation in the country and the organising of transparent elections in the country.
