Asia Cup: Rain washes out Pakistan-India blockbuster contest
Rain washed out the high-voltage contest between Pakistan and India in the Asia Cup 2023 played at the Pallakele Stadium in Sri Lanka on Saturday. Both sides shared one point.
Pakistan has qualified for the Super 4s with the shared point.
“Pakistan are through to the Super 4s after sharing points with India in today’s match,” said the Pakistan Cricket Board.
India were all out for 266 against Pakistan in their Asia Cup 2023 match at the Pallakelle Stadium in Sri Lanka, with an all-round performance from bowlers and fielders. The match was delayed.
Pakistan put India under pressure in the powerplay when Shaheen bowled Indian skipper Rohit Sharma on an inside delivery which the right-handed batter misjudged. Virat Kohli was the next batter to go in another over of Shaheen. He tried to play an outside the off stump delivery, but could not time it as the ball hit the bottom of the bat and then the wicket.
Kohli was seen disappointed as the crowd in green jersey stood from their seats while Indian fans were shocked to see one of their star players depart for just four runs.
All-rounder Hardik Pandya was looking poised to score big. He was out on a slow delivery of Shaheen. He was trying to play it straight but the ball went into the safe pairs of hands of the Pakistani fielder. Ravindra Jadeja, who came after Kishan got out, also went to the pavilion after scoring 14 runs.
Earlier, India lost its third wicket as Shreyas Iyer fell to a bowl of Haris Rauf which was caught by Fakhar Zaman.
India lost its second wicket in the sixth over when Shaheen Shah Afridi bowled Virat Kohli soon after the taking wicket of Rohit Sharma.
Sharma was sent back to the pavilion after Afridi bowled him on the last bowl of the fifth over. The Indian skipper managed to add 11 runs to the total.
The Indian and Pakistan match of the Asia Cup was interrupted due to rain after only 4.2 overs were bowled.
Batting first India managed to score 15 runs without loss of any wickets before the match was stopped due to a downpour.
Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma was unbeaten on 11 while Shubman Gill did not open his account after facing eight balls.
Earlier, Pakistan was put to bowl first as the Indian captain decided to bat after winning the toss in the high-intensity match of the Asia Cup 2023 at Pallekele Cricket Stadium in Sri Lanka on Saturday.
Pakistan has decided to field the same playing XI against archrivals India that defeated Nepal in the opening match of the Asia Cup by a big margin.
Earlier, light drizzle prompted the ground staff to cover the pitch, however, it was the schedule of the match was not changed as the downpour stopped soon.
The co-hosts of the regional event would go with three pacers, two spin-bowling all-rounders, and two batting all-rounders, said the national cricket board wrote on social media. Babar Azam would lead the side.
The Indian side is playing their opening match of the tournament against Pakistan while the green team has played one match against Nepal and won it by 238 runs in Multan on August 30.
The national side entered the Asia Cup 2023 as the number-one team in the ODI ranking of the International Cricket Council.
