Sugar imports push up prices
Imported sugar pushed up prices in Karachi, with wholesale rate increasing by Rs4.
Wholesale price reached Rs165 on monday with retail prices ranging from Rs175 to 185.
The food department said that sugar is being imported at the rate of Rs220 per kilogram.
The department has a carry forward surplus of a million tons of sugar.
If the surplus sugar stored by the government is laid out in the market and runs out, consumers will have to buy imported sugar at Rs220 per kilogram.
The price will be Rs120 over the rate they could have paid for local sugar.
