PTI chief Imran Khan has informed a joint investigation team, probing the May 9 riots, that the protesters went inside the cantonment areas on their own against his arrest by the paramilitary forces on May 9, sources told Aaj News.

Khan was interrogated by the investigation team at the Attock Jail on Friday.

Violent protests broke out on May 9 when Khan was arrested within the premises of Islamabad High Court in a graft case.

Sources quoted the PTI chief as saying that his party supporters would have protested outside the police stations if they had arrested him.

The team led by DIG Investigation Imran Kishwar asked a series of questions from the PTI chief in six terrorism cases filed against Khan.

The former prime minister stood by his claims of not having any role in inciting people to attack public and military installations. Khan claimed that he did not incite people, saying that he was arrested at the time of the riots.

Responding to a question regarding the protesters chanting his name, the former prime minister said that he did not call anyone to go to cantonment areas. He alleged that “someone else” was involved in the acts of vandalisation and not the PTI workers.

Violent protesters attacked state buildings and military installations after the PTI chief was arrested in the graft case. The previous government blamed the PTI for the protests and claimed that the former prime minister instigated his party workers against state institutions.

Last month, a special prosecutor told an antiterrorism court that a joint investigation team found PTI Chairman Imran Khan guilty of abetment and other charges in the May 9 incidents.
