Independents win big in KP local body election, but PTI emerges as largest party

Election Commission of Pakistan issued results for 72 local body seats where by elections were held on Sunday, with PTI emerging as largest party.

However, independent candidates won more seats than any other party with 40.

The polling held on vacant local government seats in 65 villages and neighbourhoods of 21 districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday. But there were reports that no one came for casting votes in KP’s Bara Tehsil.

The polling started at 8am and continued till 5pm without any interruption.

As many as 256 polling stations had been set up in the province by the Election Commission of Pakistan. At least 102 are for males, 89 for females, and 65 are joint stations – out of the total 256 – in the 21 districts.

The country’s top electoral authority had declared 156 polling stations most sensitive, 84 sensitive, and 13 normal.

Around 798 polling stations have been set up in the province. Around 208,964 are male and 176,871 are female voters – out of the total 385,835 – in the districts where elections are held.

Four candidates were contesting for farmers and youth council seats in Bara. More than 2,600 voters would exercise their right to vote in the area and two polling stations have been set up.

As many as 108 seats are vacant in the area, but only 10 candidates have filed their nomination papers for the seats as many people lament that despite local government elections their basic issues were not resolved. Eight out of the 10 were nominated without any contest.

LG elections were held on farmers councilor and youth councillor seats in VC-22 Kakakhel, Marikhel where four candidates are up for the race.

The ECP has set up a monitoring centre/complaint cell that will operate till the election results are completed. The centre which was formed on August 26 would operate till August 28.

Meanwhile, the ECP also shared a video of a polling station for women in KP.
