ECP denies reports of decision to remove Imran from party chairmanship

Imran is in jail after being convicted of 'corrupt practices'

A few days after his arrest and imprisonment, Imran Khan could also end up losing the post of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s chairman.

Sources claimed on Monday that the Election Commission of Pakistan has taken the decision to remove him from his party position after his conviction. However, the ECP ‘strongly rebutted’ the reports and said the matter was not under conisderation and no meeting had been convened to discuss the topic.

The sources had claimed that the ECP’s political finance wing has already prepared a file for the removal and a notification could be issued on Monday.

Imran was arrested from his Lahore residence minutes after a sessions court in Islamabad convicted him of corrupt practices in the Toshakhana case on August 5.

The decision disqualified him from holding public office for five years, sentenced him to a jail term of three years and imposed a fine of Rs100,000.

The law does not allow anyone ineligible for running for public office to be allowed to head a political party.
