Torrential rains have wreaked havoc in many parts of Pakistan as a landslide blocked a link road in the Bagh district of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. There were reports that rainwater entered houses and shops in different cities.

The administration has directed the people living near the streams to shift to safe locations. While heavy rains have flooded the rivers and canals in Palandri and its surrounding areas.

Last week, the National Disaster Management Authority forecasted more rains. It warned that it could lead to flooding in rivers and urban centres as well as landsliding.

Apart from this, water has entered houses and government buildings due to flooding in Chitral’s Drosh Gol Nullah.

But, downpours broke the heat spell in Haripur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The inflow of water at the Jamshed Head was 271,324 cusecs and the outflow was 256,124 cusecs. Moreover, a rise in water level has been recorded at Mangala in the Jhelum River.

“Sutlej river has low-level flood at Islam Head from where 62,751 cusecs of water are flowing. The flow of water in the Ravi river is normal,” it said.

An increase in water level was recorded in the Chenab river at Marala Khanki and Trimmu.

The rain spell would continue till August 7 in all major rivers in the upper areas, the spokesperson said and added that the intensity of rain would reduce in the second week of August.

PDMA Director General Imran Qureshi advised the people to take precautionary measures against urban flooding and heavy rains.

He also advised people to stay away from walls and roofs as house collapse incidents have been reported in loss of lives.

“Keep distance from electric wires and poles. People should avoid unnecessary travel around rivers,” Qureshi said and directed the administration to ensure the implementation of Section 144 along rivers.

Citizens should cooperate with the administration in view of the flood situation, he said.
