A federal minister, Tariq Bashir Cheema, said on Sunday that he would evict his son from his home if proven guilty in the Islamia University Bahawalpur scandal.

“If my son is proven guilty I myself will evict him from home,” National Food Security and Research Minister Tariq Bashir Cheema told a press conference in Bahawalpur. “We are ready to appear in front of every committee.”

His reaction comes after his son Wali Dad Cheema, who was sitting alongside his father in the press conference, name surfaced in the drugs and sex racket at the varsity. Police have so far arrested three suspects and claimed to have found “innumerable obscene videos and photographs of women” from one of the suspects.

On Saturday, the Higher Education Commission formed a five-member fact-finding committee to ascertain any involvement of the university administration in patronising the reports of alleged harassment and exploitation of students and faculty members at the university.

He lamented the “way” journalism where girls’ future was put at stake for political point-scoring and reiterated that if someone has evidence then they should bring it to light. But Cheema added that there was a “lot of mess” in the university which the vice chancellor should have cleaned up.

Last week, Islamia University Bahawalpur’s ex-vice chancellor Dr Athar Mehboob spoke to reported and demanded proof for the claims that thousands of obscene videos had been recovered from three university officials arrested last week. He claimed that two of the three university official arrested were “honey-trapped”.

The federal minister went on to add that a new allegation was made against him every six months. He claimed that the reason for the emergency press conference was the visit of the Chinese vice premier to Pakistan.

He warned the matter could have gotten worse if a notice was taken of the university. Cheema blamed his political rivals for “playing such games”.

The federal minister disclosed that he has filed a defamation suit against all those who have defamed him.

It was a matter of the area’s girls while propagandists would claim that all committees were formed to favour Cheema, he claimed. The minister added that he has written a letter to the interim chief minister of Punjab for conducting a judicial inquiry.

He added that parents and students were afraid of taking admission to the university.

“If there is a video bring it to light,” he said and urged his political rivals to think about the future of girls.

The federal minister was of the view that everyone should appear before the committee.

Meanwhile, a complaint was filed for the registration of case against the university’s vice chancellor at the City Police Station.

The former vice chancellor of university, Athar Mehboob, as the head of the institution, had the responsibility to prevent such incidents, said the report. It alleged that Mehboob proved to be completely unsuccessful in stopping such shameful incidents.

“Such actions in a holy institution of the university teaching have brought the Islamia university into international disrepute, so the police should file a case against the vice chancellor,” said the complaint by a citizen named Chaudhry Sohail Ahmed.
