An Indian woman who reportedly converted to Islam and married a Pakistani man in the Upper Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has rejected reports about her marriage and conversion as “baseless”.

The denial came shortly after a report and evidence of Anju’s nikah with Nasrullah surfaced on Tuesday.

Reporters obtained the copies of the nikahnama or marriage certificate and an affidavit by Anju from local officials to confirm that they had tied the knot and Anju had become Fatima after the conversion. Qazri Shimroz KHan, the religious cleric who solemnized the nikah, also said the couple had been married indeed.

But the Indian woman told a BBC Urdu reporter that there was ‘no truth’ in the reports about her marriage with Nasruallh.

Rejecting the reports as ‘baseless’ she said she was planning to leave for India tomorrow (Wednesday).

Anju also spoke to India Today and said that “claims of Nasrullah and I getting married are false.”

Asked why did she go to court, Anju said, “There is a process through which I will come back to India, which is why I went there.”

The Indian woman said she had gone out for sightseeing with Nasrullah and a local vlogger shot them together.

Anju also claimed that she did not wear a burqa. “That is not a burqa,” she said about the black garment she is seen wearing in the video, “That is something different. When we go outside, something is needed to cover up, which is why I wore it.”

The video titled “Anju weds Nasrullah” shows the couple holding hands and walking together.

However, Nasruallh too claimed that no marriage had taken place.

Wearing a burqa is a tradition, he said.

Nasrullah claimed that they visited the courts to request security after feeling insecure.

He said the authorities had deployed at least 50 police officers at his home.

Asked about the marriage certificate, Nasruallh said, “This is not my marriage certificate. These are false rumours being spread.”
