The National Disaster Management Authority has warned of heavy rains from Friday to Wednesday (July 23) as the monsoon spell enters different parts of the country.

“In the next three days, the discharge of water in Mangla, Jhelum River and Marala in Chenab River is likely to increase,” said a statement from the authority.

The warning came as many parts of Karachi received showers with dust storms. Footage showed a waterlogged street, leading to a traffic jam from Nagan Chowrangi to Power House.

At least 101 people died and 180 wounded in rain-related incidents since June 25, according to the data provided by the NDMA.

Monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea were likely to penetrate in upper and central parts of the country from July 18, according to the Met Office, leading to heavy rain in most areas of the country. This might lead to the risk of flooding in the rivers, it warned.

The disaster management authority warned that heavy rain-wind-thunderstorms with chances of heavy rainfall were expected in many areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, Gilgit Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Islamabad.

It advised the city and district administration to ensure contingency traffic plans for areas vulnerable to flooding in urban centres, catering for prompt de-watering operations in flooded areas.

The authority urged the local authorities and rescue organisations to ensure an early warning system and prompt response in vulnerable areas.

“The relevant institutions should activate the drainage system in the flood-prone areas during the rainy season,” it said and called for ensuring timely evacuation of people from low-lying areas in case of possible danger.

“Keep the necessary emergency personnel and machinery ready to deal with the flood situation,” said the statement, “the relevant provincial institutions should keep providing fresh information through all media and local platforms to keep the public informed about the expected situation.”
