Heavy rain: Wall collapse at under-construction underpass kills 11 in Islamabad

Rescue teams are looking for more bodies and survivors

During heavy rains in the twin cities of Islamabad, a wall at an under-construction underpass collapsed in the Golra Mor area killing at least 11 people.

Rescue teams immediately reached the spot and recovered 11 dead bodies. Search for more bodies and survivors was still going on.

Police said that the wall that collapsed was 11 feet tall and almost 100 feet long.

Construction workers employed on the site had put up a tent next to the wall, which crushed them to death when it collapsed during rains.

Sources at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Science, one of Islamabad’s largest public hospitals, said that 14 people have been brought to the emergencey ward of which 10 were declared dead on arrival.

The other four people were injured with head injuries and are currently in surgery.

Residents of the area said that the wall, which was still being constructed, could not stand the pressure of torrential rain and winds and collapsed under pressure.

Islamabad and Rawalpindi were hit with heavy rainfall on Wednesday morning, with almost 188 mm recorded at Shamsabad. Bokra and Golra in Islamabad, and Chaklala in Rawalpindi also received over 100mm of rain.

The Golra Mor underpass is a Rs717 million project at one of the points where traffic transits from Islamabad to Rawalpindi. It is aimed at easing flow of towards Sector I-14, I-15 and I-16.
