Suspect arrested for rape of minor girl in Karachi
A suspect was arrested on Saturday for the rape of a minor in Karachi’s Super Highway area, the police said. The Jamali Goth, where the seven-year-old girl was sexually assaulted, lies on the outskirts of the metropolitan city.
The suspect was identified as Mujtaba, according to the Sachal police. They moved the minor to the hospital where the administration confirmed that the girl was raped.
Local residents reportedly caught the alleged suspect red-handed while sexually abusing the minor girl and handed him over to police. They tortured the suspect for a long time.
The girl’s family was reportedly called to the police station to register a case. Till the filing of this story, the family went home after undergoing medical treatment.
Further legal action would be initiated in light of the medical report, police said.
In 2022, Pakistan was ranked 145th on the gender equality index owing. The data showed that a rape occurs every two minutes chiefly because of an abysmal three per cent conviction rate. Sindh’s rape cases shot up by 200% with a conviction rate of under 1% in the same year. The highest figure of 185 came from Karachi East.
Experts have stressed the need for raising awareness about good touch and bad touch in schools while calling for erasing victim-blaming and supervision of women.
