Jirga efforts yielded fruits in Kurram on Thursday as armed conflict between multiple parties that claimed 13 lives finally ended with an agreement.
Life came to a standstill in Kurram, as heavy weapons were used by both sides. In addition to the 13 deaths, 102 people were injured as well.
According to the agreement brokered by the Divisional Grand Jirga led by Kurram’s District Commissioner Dr Azmat Wazir, all trenches and checkposts being used by the warring factions have been handed over to law enforcement agencies.
All thoroughfares in the city have been opened for safe travel for residents and the peace has been guaranteed for one year effective immediately.
Moreover, any party that violates the peace agreement will be fined Rs12 million.
The agreement said that the fighting in Kurram lasted for seven days from July 7 to July 13 and had initially begun as a property dispute. However, the conflict soon took sectarian colours.
The agreement also said that security officials and district administration officials tried to end the conflict, but were thwarted by the intensity of the armed conflict.
The agreement also says that if any untoward incident takes place, residents of the area will be bound to cooperate with law enforcement officials. It also says that locals will not side with fighting parties.
