Floods: 86 dead, 151 injured as rivers continue to swell

A total of 86 people have died from water related disasters after record breaking rains and water outflows from India into rivers Ravi and Sutlej.

The National Disaster Managment Authority said on Tuesday morning that six people had died across the country in the last 24 hours alone.

Meanwhile, nine people were injured in the last 24 hours taking the total number of inured people to 151.

A total of 97 houses have been affected by the recent rains and floods of which 85 received partial damage while 12 have been completely destroyed.

Warnings issued for multiple districts

Authorities have instructed the district administrations in Kasur, Okara, Vehari and Pakpattan to stay alert and complete preparations for any flood like stiuations.

A state of high alert has been declared across Punjab especially for low lying areas close to rivers and their nullahs.

India releases water into Sutlej

After releasing thousands of cusecs of water into the Ravi earlier, India released over 95,000 cusecs of water into the Sutlej river through the Harike wetlands.

The additional water is expected to reach Kasur in about 12 hours.

Additional flows from India into the Ravi had raised the level of water by 4 feet in a single day.
