Indian actress Kajol issued a clarification after her comments irked the Indian citizens in which she said that India is being governed by political leaders who ‘do not have an educational system background’.

Taking to Twitter, she said that her intentions were not specific to any political leader, but was making a point about education in the country.

“I was merely making a point about education and its importance. My intention was not to demean any political leaders, we have some great leaders who are guiding the country on the right path,” she tweeted.

The Kuch Kuch Hota Hai actress found herself in hot waters after she said that the slow progress of India was due to “visionless” leaders, while the people were “steeped” in traditions and “lacked” proper education.

“You have political leaders who do not have an educational system background,” Kajol, who was promoting her upcoming courtroom drama The Trial, told The Quint.

“I’m sorry but I’m going to go out and say that. I’m being ruled by leaders, so many of them, who do not have that viewpoint, which I think education does give you, at least the chance to look out for a different viewpoint,” she added.

Several Indians took to Twitter to show their anger over the actress’s comments as one user said, “School dropouts with fluent English will never acknowledge that being traditions are no hindrance to growth”.

Another raised questions over the actress’s qualifications. “Kajol is a school dropout. Her husband is a college dropout.”

One user called it a PR stunt as her web series is coming and “she needs some free marketing for it”.

Kajol will be appearing in The Trial, an adaptation of the American courtroom drama The Good Wife.

The drama marks Kajol’s web series debut. In the show, actor Jisshu Sengupta will be seen playing the role of her husband.
