The federal government is considering changing its ambassador to the United States and the names of multiple career diplomats are under discussion to fill the post.

The post is currently held by Masood Khan, a carrer diplomat who retired from official service in 2015. He was appointed ambassador as Dr Asad Majeed’s tenure ended.

The prime minister office has already invited suggestions for the appointment of the next ambassador. Khalil Hashmi, who serves as Pakistan’s permanent representative in Geneva, is reportedly a strong candidate for the post.

However, Hashmi has already been nominated as Pakistan’s new ambassador in Russia. IF he is appointed to represent Pakistan in the US, Safeer Khalid Khan will be sent to Russia instead.

Other names under consideration for the US post include Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, who is currently serving as the ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. Pakistan’s current envoy in Russia, Shafqat Ali Khan, and ambassador to North Korea, Nabil Munir, are also being considered.
