HEC withdraws notice banning Holi in Pakistan universities
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has withdrawn the notification banning Holi celebrations in universities across Pakistan after receiving severe criticism.
The withdrawal notification came just a day after the education body banned the Hindu festival saying that such activities portray a complete disconnect from the country’s sociocultural values and are an erosion of the country’s Islamic identity.
The HEC said that it is “highly respectful of all religions, faiths, and beliefs, and the associated festivals and celebrations observed in the country”.
The commission termed the previous notice was “taken out of context”. “Considering that the message inferred from the communication has regrettably led to misinterpretation, HEC is pleased to withdraw the same,” read the notification dated June 22.
Earlier this month, The event, touted as the “biggest Holi celebration in Pakistan,” drew both praise and criticism from various quarters.
The videos of the celebrations also went viral on social media.
