Pakistan is still reeling from the loss of hudreds of migrants going towards Europe after the boat traged off the Greek coast on Saturday, as the globe observes World Refugees Day.

According to latest data, 40,618 Pakistanis applied for asylum in other countries till the end of 2022. (The number indicates initial and continuing asylum applications.) Data shows that only around 15% of all asylum seekers managed to get their applications accepted.

Here are the top 10 countries which received the most asylum applications from Pakistan in the Last year.

This is simply a top-10 list of where people are heading to, so it is also useful to see how welcoming these countries are to accepting refugees who apply for asylum.

In this next visualisation, bars have been placed in the same order as the above chart, while the blue line shows how high or low the acceptance rate is.

You can see that Italy gets the most applications by a fair margin, but it has one of the lowest acceptance rate out of the top-10 destination countries. Meanwhile Canada and Australia are more likely to accept an asylum application, but far fewer people apply to them.

The data also shows that Greece and Italy, both mentioned during the recent boat tragedy on which Pakistanis were the largest tragedy, are featured on the list. Both receive a high number of applications from asylum seekers, but both have some of the lowest acceptance rates in the world.
