Profiles of mayors, deputy mayors of Karachi and Hyderabad

Now Karachi mayor and Sindh administration are under PPP's control

The PPP made history on Monday after Murtaza Wahab took oath as the Karachi mayor, becoming the first leader from the party to serve the city in such a capacity that runs Pakistan’s economy.

Sindh Election Commissioner Ejaz Anwar Chauhan administered the oath to Wahab and his deputy Salman Murad while Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Governor Kamran Tessori were also present on the occasion.

Below is the profile of mayors, deputy mayors of Karachi and Hyderabad

Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab

Wahab is currently serving as an adviser to the Sindh chief minister and spokesperson for the provincial government. He is the son of the late PPP’s leader Fauzia Wahab.

He is a lawyer by profession. He holds BLLB and Bar at Law degrees. He started his political career in 2015 when he was inducted into Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah’s cabinet as an adviser to the CM on the law. He was later promoted to minister status on May 25, 2015.

On November 22, 2016, the Sindh High Court ruled the appointment of Wahab as adviser to the chief minister “illegal”. The court cancelled Wahab’s appointment as chairperson of the board of governors of the law colleges in Karachi.

He was elected as senator on August 15, 2017 after his fellow party leader Saeed Ghani resigned from the seat.

Wahab contested for the seat of the member of the provincial assembly from Constituency PS-111 (Karachi South-V) during the general elections in 2018, but lost to the PTI’s Imran Ismail.

The same year he was once again instated into the Sindh cabinet of CM Murad Ali Shah and appointed as the adviser to the CM on law and Anti-Corruption Establishment.

On August 5, 2021, he was appointed the administrator of Karachi - in charge of leading the KMC. He had, however, tried to resign in September 2022 after the SHC’s verdict to stop the KMC tax on electric bills. But the Sindh government refused to accept his resignation.

The provincial government directed him to continue working until a new administrator is appointed. On December 8, 2022, Doctor Saifur Rehman replaced as the new KMC administrator.

Karachi Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad

Deputy Mayor of Karachi Salman Abdullah Murad was born in December 1980. He studied in Civil Aviation Airport School and passed his intermediate examination from the Government Science College Malir. He later took admission to Karachi University for higher studies.

Murad’s father Abdullah Murad was a prominent leader of the PPP. Before his father’s death, Murad was mostly involved in doing business. However, after the death of his father, he started taking an interest in politics.

In 2008, Murad was appointed as special assistant to the CM of Sindh. Later in 2016, he was elected as the chairman of the District Council Karachi. Murad served in this post for four years.

Murad is also the founder of the Shaheed Abdullah Murad Foundation. He was nominated by the PPP for the seat of the deputy mayor.

Hyderabad Mayor Kashif Khan Shoro

Kashif Khan Shoro belongs to a Sindhi descent political family. He is the younger brother of Sindh’s Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro.

The PPP leader completed his master’s degree in Economics from the University of Sindh.

He was elected as the chairman of the Municipal Committee Qasimabad

Deputy Mayor Hyderabad Sagheer Ahmed Qureshi

PPP’s Deputy Mayor of Hyderabad Sagheer Ahmed Qureshi was born on February 2, 1963, in Hyderabad.

He did his matriculation from the Government SK Rahim High School Hyderabad. Later, he graduated from Government Degree College Latifabad and did a master’s in International Relations from Sindh University.

During his college days, Qureshi started his political activities and actively participated in UC, Taluka, provincial and national elections. He was locked up in 1987, 96, and 99.

He was elected as MPA from Hyderabad in 1993 and also worked as PPP’s district general secretary. Since March 2017, he is the PPP Hyderabad’s president.

Qureshi is currently serving as the special assistant to the CM Sindh.
