With Karachi mayor, Sindh govt under PPP’s belt, Qamar stresses need for city’s uplift
There would be harmony between Karachi’s local government and provincial government after the PPP succeeded in the mayoral electoral, Minister for Commerce Syed Naveed Qamar said on Sunday.
“As both LG and provincial governments are of the PPP, we now need to peacefully work towards the development of Karachi,” he said at Shaukat Piracha’s show Rubaroo on Aaj News.
Newly-elected Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab will take the oath of office on Monday.
Wahab, who belongs to the PPP, had beaten JI’s Hafiz Naeemur Rehman in the mayoral election on June 15. Wahab had received 173 votes to Naeem’s 160.
While speaking about the JI’s reaction over the mayor’s election, Qamar said that it has become a norm in the country that the defeated party in the elections does not accept results and alleges rigging.
“The JI had been saying from the beginning that it will not accept the result of the LG elections, if its mayor is not elected. The rigging allegations are usual by the political parties, however, we need closure at the end of the day where we respect each other’s mandate,” the minister said.
As the federal government is nearing the end of its term, the political parties are gearing up for elections.
Qamar said that the recent statements of the political leaders against each other are because the country is going for elections. But he said, that there were no major rifts between PPP and the PML-N.
