The Islamabad police registered on Friday a complaint of former prime minister’s principal secretary Azam Khan, who has gone missing according to his family, on charges of abduction or kidnapping.

“On June 15, 2023, my uncle [Azam Khan] left his house around/between 6:30/7pm for an appointment in Islamabad but since has been missing and not in communication with anyone,” said the complaint registered at Kohsar Police Station.

The complaint, which was registered on the complaint of Khan’s nephew, Muhammad Saeed Khan, was registered under Section 365 (kidnapping or abducting for extorting property, valuable security, etc) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Khan was part of the PTI-led government, which was ousted in 2022. He was a grade 22 officer till the tenure of the previous government. In 2017, he served as chief secretary in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

His name came to light when an alleged audio tape from the PM House was leaked in September 2022. Khan had allegedly proposed that a meeting should be called on the cipher where the-then foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi reads out the letter.

The “cipher” was the document, which the PTI claimed as a proof of foreign conspiracy hatched to dislodge their government. But later the PTI had different versions of such proofs when the former premier spoke about it in different interviews.

“The undersigned and his family have checked from every possible contact about his whereabouts and so far have not been able to trace him. His phone is also switched off and cannot be reached,” it added.

The family called for necessary legal action including registration of FIR of “missing/abducted” Khan “at the earliest”.

The Islamabad police said that they would take legal action regarding the disappearance of Khan.

“The applicant should contact the concerned police station so that legal action can be taken,” it tweeted and added that if anyone has any information regarding the bureaucrat then on call 15.

While Khan’s family claims his disappearance, the National Accountability Bureau has sent a notice to the former principal secretary to appear before the NAB team in the National Crime Agency case (also known as Al-Qadir Trust case) on June 19.

The anti-graft body directed on Friday Khan to bring the documents related to the case with him at the time of his appearance.

The Al Qadir Trust case alleges that the PTI chief and his wife obtained billions of rupees and land worth hundreds of kanals from a business tycoon for legalising Rs50 billion that was returned to the country by the UK during the previous PTI government.
