Students block University Road in Karachi to protest ‘abduction’
Students unions staged a protest demonstration and blocked the University Road in Karachi on Friday after an Urdu department student was allegedly picked up from outside the mosque located inside the University of Karachi.
Later, the student was recovered in an injured stated, claim IJT spokesperson adding that “he was tortured during the abduction”.
The missing student was identified as Saqib, who reportedly had asked the son of an LEA personnel to remove his car from the road as it was blocking traffic, the protesters said.
Aaj News could not independently verify the claim.
The protesters claimed seven to eight armed men wearing civvies came in a Vigo pickup and abducted the student after the Friday prayers.
The students blocked the university road near the Silver Jubilee gate of the university in protest and demanded the release of Saqib.
In response, the police baton charged the crowd to disperse them and allegedly threatened them to lodge FIRs against the protesting students.
Islami Jamiat Talaba led the protest as the missing student was its member. However, APMSO and the Insaf Students Federation also participated in the protest, an IJT student said. Flags of these two unions were seen at the protest.
If the student is not recovered soon, the IJT will spread the protest and react strongly, said Basiq, the spokesman of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba Karachi.
“The abduction of a student from the university in broad daylight is a slap on the face of the university administration. The student should be rescued immediately.”
Meanwhile, the University’s security advisor said that Rangers have nothing to do with the matter.
