A man wanted in connection with the murder of Professor Ajmal Sawand was killed in a tribal clash on Wednesday.

Karam Deen Sundrani was killed when the men from the Sawand and Sundrani tribes collided in a village in Kandhkot. The clashes also resulted in two other people being injured.

Dr Sawand was an assistant professor at IBA Sukkur’s computer science department and had completed his PhD from France. He was killed in April when gunmen opened fire on his vehicle as he travelled from Sukkur to his village Shalu Khan.

Initial reports had said that the killing was the result issue of an old honor killing dispute, but the FIRregistered later said Ajmal Sawand was killed for his refusal to pay extortion money.

The FIR said around 15 days before the murder, Ajmal refused to pay Rs2 million in extortion to Aijaz Ali Sundrani and was threatened with dire consequences.

All 12 men nominated in the FIR had belonged to the Sundrani tribe. Police had immediately began an operation against the tribe but none of the accused had been apprehended.
