Fact Check: Bilawal did not visit a war memorial for Indian soldiers
Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s meeting in Goa, and the debate over whether the trip was a success or a failure is still going on.
Bilawal told the Indian press that India’s revocation of India’s special status must be reversed. Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar launched into desperate diatribe saying that Pakistan was an ‘industry of terror’. While many people, PTI leaders included, used Jaishankar’s words to paint Bilawal’s visit a failure, some posts criticising Bilawal were not quite correct.
One tweet claimed Bilawal had visited a memorial for Indian soldiers killed in Kargil and even laid a wreath. The claim is false.
Apart from the fact that long overcoat is quite unsuitable for visiting India in May, there is a tweet by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari himself which shows where the image is from.
The tweet with the said photo was posted on Feb 21, 2023 while Bilawal was on an official tour of Lithuania.
“Had a tour of Seimas, Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania & laid a wreath at the Memorial of those who laid down their lives in the Struggle for the Independence of Lithuania,” Bilawal had written in the tweet.
The visit was the first made by a Pakistani foreign minister to the Baltic state and expansion of bilateral ties was discussed.
The account that made the claim has also been called out for making misleading statements in the past. In one such instance, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry’s wife Hiba had accused the account of publishing a fake list of party candidates from Faisalabad.
