Haqqani serves notice to Imran over ‘defamatory’ remarks

Imran has accused Haqqani of lobbying against him on Bajwa's behalf

Husain Haqqani has sent a legal notice to Imran Khan on Tuesday demanding that the former prime minister should stop making ‘false and defamatory’ statements against him or face legal action.

The legal notice was served through the office of Steven Barentzen from the United States and mentions the specific accusation made by Imran Khan against Haqqani of ‘providing lobbying services to Retired Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa in the United States and launching an against you (Imran),’

Over a year after Imran Khan was ousted from power, he has increasingly named Husain Haqqani’s connection with former army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa as the root of a ‘plan’ to bring down his government.

He has alleged that General Bajwa had asked Haqqani, a former ambassador of Pakistan in the United States, of lobbying to create an impression in American authority circles that Imran was aligned against the US government.

Imran has also alleged that the lobbying aimed to present Bajwa as a more friendly ally of the US. Haqqani has flatly denied the accusations or any role in bringing down Imran Khan’s government.

The legal notice further says that Imran’s allegations against Haqqani are not just false but also ‘dangerous’ because they could rile up his supporters into acting against Haqqani.

’Your conduct targeting Mr Haqqani is particularly troubling considering your Pakistani followers have been known to engage in violence and have attacked prominent Pakistanis even outside the country,“ the notice says. It adds that Haqqani is being harrased by PTI officials on social media.

The notice warns Imran that if the statements against Haqqani do onot end or end up bringing him harm, legal action will be taken ‘to not only protect and defend himself but also to hold you accountable’.
