An application has been filed in the Supreme Court of Pakistan asking for early hearing of the contempt of court case against Imran Khan in a case related to the long march on May 25.

The application says that when Imran Khan marched towards Islamabad in May last year, the Islamabad High Court Bar had filed a request in court to make sure that political activity would not hinder the free movement of citizens of Islamabad.

The application says that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had been directed to hold their gathering at a ground between G-9 and H-9 alongside the Srinagar Highway in Islamabad. However, Imran Khan’s supporters marched to D-Chowk anyway under a ‘pre-planned and pre-conceived manner’.

The application further adds that when the police ‘lawfully’ confronted PTI supporters, they ‘resorted to violence’ and even damaged public property.

The hearing had been set for ‘next week’ in December, the application argues, but has not been heard despite the lapse of five months. It also argues that the case is of an urgent nature since the security of citizens and public property is concerned.

The long march to Islamabad last May was announced after Imran Khan addressed a number of political rallies across the country after his ouster. However, the march had ended without any major political gains after a full night of clashes between PTI supporters and police near D-Chowk.

The contempt case is only one of many that have been filed against Imran Khan since he was removed from office with a no-confidence motion. He is also facing a case for not declaring Tyrian White as his dependant, for selling Toshakhana gifts and for marrying Bushra Bibi before her iddat was over. All of these cases are seeking to disqualify him from holding public office.
